What does the future of retail look like?

At Nethold Group, we have been wondering lately what the future of retail holds.

It is important for anyone who has an interest in commercial property, whether you rent commercial property or own any type of commercial property.

How will small business compete against the ''unlimited'' options that online shopping offer?  How can they adapt to the new online world?

We have searched and found some interesting and thought-provoking articles on the future of retail.

The first insightful information found was on, in a slide show entitled Inside the Store of the Future. According to these predictions, shops of the future will have the look of a nightclub, be social and ''coded for conversation'', technology will be front and center and the interior designers will specifically design stores to promote eye contact.

The futurist  Anders Sorman-Nilsson wrote an article on his blog entitled What does the future of retail look like?  He thinks the retail experience must shift to be relevant in the future.  He says a retail store will become more of a showroom or concept store.

Mastercard did a study about online shopping in South Africa and produced a great infographic to show the results.

It seems that retailers must start taking note of the new trends emerging and evolving at great speed.  We will certainly be paying attention, as it affects our business too!

4 Ways to lower the rental cost of your business premises

Being in the property business for many years, we have been requested numerous times to lower rental cost for specific premises. It is not always possible for various reasons and often such a request is denied.

We have some suggestions on what you can do if you need to lower the rental cost of your business premise.

(1) Request to subdivide your premises.
  • Discuss the possibility with your landlord.
  • This will immediately lower your rent and the landlord has a new tenant.

(2) Ensure that the marketing for your business is up to standard.
  • Many small businesses neglect this aspect and rely on the shopping centre to draw feet to their business.
  • The higher your revenue and the more profit you make and the less you worry about the rent you are paying.
  • The rent is then low compared to the profits that you are making.

(3) Negotiate a smaller area upfront with the landlord.
  • Especially if you are starting up your business.
  • This will minimize your expense from the start.

(4) Know exactly what your space requirements are.
  • Do not take more than you require.
  • Rent exactly what you need.
